Triclosan: Hazardous chemical in consumer products

Triclosan, a common chemical ingredient in antibacterial products such as soaps, toothpastes and mouthwashes was found to impair muscle function in laboratory and animal tests.

It was originally developed in the 1960s, to be used in hospitals to prevent bacterial infections. Since then, triclosan has been used extensively in numerous household products, but now, studies performed mostly in animals suggest that triclosan might be toxic.
