While swaying on a hammock: Tragic story of the lottery’s unluckiest winners

“We’re normal human beings,” said Cindy Hill on Friday, moments after she and her husband, Mark, posed with an oversized check for $293,750,000. “We’re common,” she added. “We just have more money.”

That check represents half of the more than  $500 million Powerball lottery jackpot, which the Hills are one of the two lucky winners.

The Hills are cognizant of their need to obtain professional financial help. Common wisdom says people who suddenly fall into extreme wealth rarely know how to handle their new circumstances.

Thus, the Hills may avoid yet becoming another tragic story like those of past lotto winners who merely squandered away their million-dollar winnings.

Time has an intriguing article on this by Terri Pous, “The Tragic Stories of the Lottery’s Unluckiest Winners.” And in this edition of While swaying on a hammock, we’ll feature one personality – Andrew “Jack” Whittaker who took merely four years to lose all his winnings of $315 million.
 _ _ _

Andrew Whittaker may have been the wealthiest man ever to win a major lottery jackpot. When the 55-year-old West Virginia construction company president won a $315 million Powerball jackpot in December 2002 — at the time, the largest jackpot ever won by a single ticket — he was already worth some $17 million.

And Whittaker knew to distribute his new mega-wealth, pledging to give 10 percent of his fortune to Christian charities, donating $14 million to his Jack Whittaker Foundation, and even giving a $123,000 house, a new Dodge Ram Truck, and $50,000 in cash to the woman who worked at the convenience store where he had purchased his winning ticket.

But even Whittaker couldn’t escape his own demons. Beset by legal difficulties and personal problems, he began drinking heavily and frequenting strip clubs. On Aug. 5, 2003, thieves stole $545,000 from his car in a West Virginia strip club parking lot while he was inside. In January 2007, Whittaker reported to the police that thieves had completely emptied his bank accounts. On Jan. 25, 2004, robbers once again broke into his car, stealing an estimated $200,000 in cash that was later recovered

And a string of personal tragedies followed. On Sept. 17, 2004, his granddaughter’s boyfriend was found dead from a drug overdose in Whittaker’s home. Three months later, the granddaughter also died of a drug overdose. Her mother, Ginger Whittaker Bragg, died five years later on July 5, 2009.

Whittaker himself is alleged to be broke — a claim he made as early as January 2007 for failing to pay a women who successfully sued him. He’s also being sued by Caesars Atlantic City casino for bouncing $1.5 million worth of checks to cover gambling losses. “I wish I’d torn that ticket up,” he sobbed to reporters at the time of his daughter’s death.

Manifesting inner desires of good

I told her she should create a special place where she can completely be herself. It might be a room in her house, or at a park near her home. It might even be a sidewalk table at a neighborhood tavern where she can sit and quickly sketch the faces of people as they walk by. It might also be a table at Starbucks where she can scribble uplifting thoughts. It can be the comfortable lounge chair in her parents’ living room where she can hug an overstuffed pillow.

The only criterion here is it should be a place she can experience what she is and what she might become; a place to roam her field of dreams.

I told her to think of ideal conditions that she wants to manifest in her life. It might be about a more fulfilling love life, or the financial independence she has been longing for. I urged her to begin actualizing those desires by creating detailed mental movies about them. And that she should save them in a special place in her mind for her to return to and expand upon on a regular basis.

And while engaged in such mental exercises, in case unwanted thoughts begin to disturb her consciousness, I told her to keep her eyes closed and remain focused on her breathing. She should then count the first inhale as one, the exhale as two, and so forth; return to one again after the tenth count.

Should those negative thoughts persist, I advised her to firmly but silently utter the word, “Stop!” And to keep saying it until she regains total control of her thoughts. After which, resume her breathing exercises, but on a slower pace. I told her to do this for about 10 minutes, or for whatever length of time she is comfortable with.

When she likened it to meditation I said, “Sort of, but it’s more like setting the stage for a magical life.”  When she asked who powers this magic, with a smile I told her, “You do, because your inner desires of good are God’s desires for you.”

Expectancy

We should daily affirm that new ideas are coming to us, new ways of doing things; that we are meeting new and wonderful friends, new situations; that joyous things are going to happen to us. The Creative Principle is always reacting to us as we act in It. It is always creating in our bodies and our affairs. Consequently, we should all learn to live in a state of joyous and enthusiastic expectancy. This is the principle upon which faith and the answer to prayer are based.

Let us, then, bless everything we do and everyone we meet, knowing that the limitations of the past need not be carried into the future. Nothing is too good to be true.  Nothing is too much to ask of the Power that can do anything.

There is something within each one of us which is conscious of our unity with Good, with all the Power there is. Upon this Power, Presence, and Light we must depend with complete confidence. Thus faith passes into experience with scientific certainty. Faith is the most dynamic phenomenon known.

Imagination

Imagination is your greatest gift from the Universe. Do not be afraid to use it to manifest your inner desires of good.

Imagine yourself as being completely all right at this time. Imagine yourself as Whole, Complete, and Perfect. That is, with nothing to change, nothing to improve.

Purge all thoughts of inadequacies and limitations.

Vanquish any thought about yourself as a mere outsider always looking in.  Imagine your own circle filled with supportive and kindred spirits.

Imagine your heart as being open again, your life as if it were starting over in the most important ways.

It is said that if you can imagine the ideal condition for yourself and loved ones, then you have just created tomorrow.

In The New York Times article that features Phyllis Diller who recently passed away, it mentions the late comedienne's inroad into show business:

Quote

She started to move toward a career in show business without realizing it. She was poor and unhappy, and she would meet other poor and unhappy women at the Laundromat and regale them with accounts of her home life. She also tried to inject humor into the advertising and publicity copy she wrote. Word spread about Phyllis Diller, and soon she was being asked to give presentations at parties and P.T.A. meetings.

Her husband thought she should be paid to make people laugh. She lacked the confidence to do it until she read a self-help book, “The Magic of Believing” by Claude M. Bristol. Inspired by its message of empowerment, she began to write her own comedy routines, hired a drama coach to give her more stage presence, and took whatever paid or unpaid performing jobs she could get: at hospitals, women’s clubs, church halls.

Unquote

And the rest was history as they say.  Phyllis Diller, with her new-found set of beliefs drawn from the book “The Magic of Believing” had, in essence, paved her own way towards fame and fortune and thus, opening the door for other female comedians, such as Joan Rivers, Roseanne Barr, Whoopi Goldberg, Ellen DeGeneres, Sandra Bernhard and numerous others.

The book's strongest message: that virtually anything can be yours, and you can be anything, if you are able to develop a 'knowing' about it that you don't ever need to question.

On Alexander the Great and Napoleon, the author asserts, "They became supermen because they had supernormal beliefs. Your belief about yourself and your place in the world is arguably the major determinant of success."

Moreover, "If you can understand the relationship between the conscious and the subconscious minds," Bristol says, "you will get to the core of belief power. The subconscious constantly works to express our deepest beliefs and desires. It is a faithful servant which renews, guides and inspires, but to get the most from it requires greater respect for and faith in what it can do. Because the subconscious operates in terms of imagery, it is vital that we feed it mental pictures of what we desire. It can then go to work in 'living up to' the image placed before it, by giving us intuitions about what to do, where to go, who to meet."

A brand new day

This day will usher in a new beginning.
God has given you this day to use as you will.
You can waste it or use it for good.
What you do today is important, because
You are exchanging a day of your life for it.
When tomorrow comes,
this day will be gone forever,
leaving in its place something
that you have traded for it.
You want it to be gain, not loss;
good not evil; success not failure;
in order that you shall not regret
the price you paid for it.

Letting God Be God

In your subconscious mind is the creative process of the ages, the process which every successful person has used.

It cannot refuse to serve you. It has no favorites, and it knows no limitations. It awaits your demand that it acts. Upon your demand, it proceeds to fulfill this demand without stress or strain. The mental machinery of your subconscious mind moves into action in orderly ways and draws upon resources far greater than the conscious mind could ever know. No wonder that modern metaphysicians call this function of mind "God." They sense the magnitude of its ability and they use this tremendous creative potential to produce what they want in life.

All of this is already in you. The great use it. The non-great do not, so they remain the non-great.

Decide upon some thing – situation or condition – that you want right now in your present life. Be definite in this decision. Do not limit your decision by investigating the probable reasons why it will never happen. That is the detour to nothing. All false speculations of defeat have to be ruled out of your consciousness. If they enter into the decision for even a fleeting moment, the decision is robbed of authority and the subconscious mind cannot act upon it. You do not need to know how the final result will come to pass. That is the function of the subconscious. It has ways and means that, if they were known, would stagger the intellect.

Say to your subconscious:

"This is my decision. I now authorize you to accomplish this. I have total confidence in your abilities and resources. I authorize this without any reservation. I do not place this demand in a framework of time or condition. It is a free demand now established in my subconscious mind. This mind now has it clearly."

Then relax and let your subconscious have free reign. Keep clear of all doubt. Keep clear of all worry. God, in your subconscious as your subconscious, is the power and the mind that accomplishes your desire.

Let God be God, and keep your hands off the process.

Your subconscious will reveal to your conscious mind directions to take and ways to proceed. Idea will follow idea in perfect order and sequence. You become the observer of the creative process now taking place in you. From the observation point in the conscious mind, you watch what you wanted to have happen, happen. You are under no strain.

You are the observer and the participant.

Together our comfort abounds

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.

It's all about having the right consciousness

The following is an excerpt from Dr. Patricia J. Crane’s "Open Your Arms to Receiving."  She wants you to open yourself to receiving by creating wealth consciousness, and then watching your dreams come true:

Did you know that there is enough money on this planet for everyone (yes, everyone) to have a million dollars? So why is it that Bill Gates has BILLIONS, others have a million, and others have only a small amount? The answer is simple: consciousness.

Each of us has played out the beliefs from childhood about deservability and money to create whatever we have in our lives right at this moment. If all the billions on the planet were redistributed tomorrow and no one changed their consciousness about money, it would all be back to the same people in the same amounts in about six months. Are you willing to change your consciousness RIGHT NOW about what you deserve to receive?

Take a few minutes to sit quietly. Close your eyes and allow your mind to gently drift back in time to some significant experience about money when you were growing up. What happened? What was the belief you developed from that experience? If it was limiting, imagine yourself as that child and begin to tell the child that it’s time to create a new set of ideas about money that are expansive and supportive. Tell the child what those new affirmations are. If the experience you remembered helped you with positive thoughts about money, reinforce those with your inner child.

Ask yourself: who would you betray if you were financially successful? When I ask that question in my courses, the answer is often mom or dad (or both).  Somehow, the child part feels guilty going beyond the parents’ limitations. You can close your eyes and talk to mom or dad, or anyone else who had a significant influence on your prosperity beliefs, and tell them that it’s OK for both of you to be prosperous and successful.

Go to the mirror and do the same thing. Be willing to go past old limitations. When you accept your prosperity, you also encourage others to do the same. Your life can be an example of willingness to receive from our abundant universe. “Prosperity,” in my definition, is specifically about money and materials things, while “abundance” has to do with a full life in all areas.

Read more here:

In Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff About Money, the author, Richard Carlson claims, "True wealth consciousness suggests a complete absence of money worries; an awareness that there is always plenty of money to go around. People who live with true abundance never worry about having enough—they know that creating wealth and affluence is a function of their own mind-set. Worry keeps us from feeling free and joyful. We are never truly free until we break the chains of fear. But once we do our lives will never be the same. A life without worry is a life of abundance, a life well lived.”

He reminds us about our tendency to attract the experience that which our mind is focused on.

In essence, it is virtually impossible, he argues, to attract abundance in our lives if we constantly worry about not having enough of anything. That would be allowing our fears to interfere with “our means of creation.”

On the other hand, he asserts that if we are free of worries, if we maintain wealth consciousness, money will flow to us in inexhaustible ways. And that we will literally create ways to keep attracting money into our lives.

He goes on to say, “Make no mistake about it: Wealth consciousness comes first! You will not suddenly develop wealth consciousness if and when you become wealthy. It is the other way around. You develop wealth consciousness by eliminating worry, by trusting in the universe and in your own resources. Once you secure your wealth consciousness, true abundance is just around the corner.”

Law of attraction at work

When you close your eyes and you visualize having money and imagine doing all the things you want with that money, you are creating a new reality.

Your subconscious mind and the law of attraction do not know whether you are imagining something or whether it is real. And so when you imagine, the law of attraction receives those thoughts and images as though you were actually living them, and it must return those visions to you.

When you are in the place where what you are imagining feels real, you will know that it has penetrated your subconscious mind, and the law of attraction must deliver it.

Eradicating poverty

According to a recent survey by pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS), the number of Filipino families experiencing hunger dropped by about one million in late May. From a record-high 23.8 percent last March, hunger rate fell to 18.4 percent as of late May, SWS said in a report published on its media partner BusinessWorld.

SWS said the new figure translates to some 3.8 million hungry families, down from a high of 4.8 million families last March.

Meanwhile, the number of Filipino families that consider themselves poor has declined, the Social Weather Stations (SWS) claimed in its new report where it also noted self-rated food poverty gains.

A May 24-27 survey, the results of which were made exclusive to BusinessWorld, found 51% of the respondents -- equivalent to an estimated 10.3 million households -- rating themselves as poor. This was down four points from March’s 55% (11.1 million families), the highest poverty score so far under the current Aquino administration.

With regard to being poor in terms of food, meanwhile, 39% of the respondents (estimated 7.9 million families) claimed to be so, six points down from the prior survey’s 45% (9.1 million).

Government officials said sustained anti-poverty programs were responsible, adding that this would lead to further gains.

In America, its war on poverty has so far cost American taxpayers $15 trillion since 1964. And despite such astonishing funding, America remains coping with a poverty rate that has barely budged, an entrenched bureaucracy, and a population — like that of Greece and Portugal, two welfare-state basket cases — increasingly dependent on government handouts.

These are the conclusions of a recent Cato Institute report on the American welfare state by Michael Tanner, Cato’s director of health and welfare studies and author of The Poverty of Welfare: Helping Others in Civil Society.

“The vast majority of current programs are focused on making poverty more comfortable — giving poor people more food, better shelter, health care, and so forth — rather than giving people the tools that will help them escape poverty,” Tanner remarks. “The best way to create wealth,” he explains, “is not through government action, but through the power of the free market.”

As for the tools to help the poor rise out of poverty, how about creating programs to change their mindset as proposed by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer?  He is the author of Real Magic – Creating miracles in daily life.

In his book, Dr. Dyer basically points out that everything we need to acquire prosperity has always been within us, but we must first eliminate the hindrance—the scarcity consciousness—which prevents us from experiencing abundance in our life. He illustrates this principle with the following story:

A man who was ragged and appeared to be without anything in a physical sense came upon a road boss and said, “Can you help me? I need work.”

The road boss said, “Fine, take that large boulder over there and roll it up and down the hill. If you need work that will fulfill your need.”

The man said, “You don’t understand, what I really need is money.

The boss replied, “Oh, if it is only money that you need, here is fifty dollars. But you cannot spend it.”

Again, the man was perplexed. “You don’t understand, what I really need is food and fuel and clothing, not just money.”

The boss again replied, “If you are sure that this is really what you need, then spend the money for food, fuel and clothing, but don’t eat the food, or burn the fuel or wear the clothing.”

The man was finally forced to look at what he really needed, which was a sense of security, peace and inner satisfaction. All totally invisible, all within the mind. All divine sustenance.

The author further claims, “What you need, you already have, and when you know it, and go within and create it in your mind, the divine sustenance you seek in the form of material things or money will be manifested in whatever amounts needed.”

That whenever we say to ourselves, “I don’t have enough money,” “The economy is bad these days,” “I don’t have the appropriate educational background,” or, “I didn’t come from the right family and therefore, will never get the promotion and earn the money I want,” we are operating in our mental world from a position of lack or the underprivileged. Therefore, we deprive our own self the opportunity of going into the world of real magic; hence unable to experience a life of prosperity and abundance.

Dr. Dyer also mentions of the time he was accused of having a cavalier attitude toward the poor by a radio talk show host when he was a guest on his program. Dr. Dyer’s contention was that being broke is a temporary state of affairs that afflicts everyone at some point in life, but being poor is an attitude, a set of beliefs that gets reinforced when we shift to blaming life circumstances for the condition of poverty.

One of the incoming calls in response to this radio conversation was from a physician in Washington, D.C., who had grown up in a family of thirteen children in appalling poverty in Jamaica. He disagreed with the host, saying:

I lived in dirt-poor conditions all of my life. I mean hungry, starving poverty. But I always had a vision of myself as a doctor. I could not lose that vision, and I would always tell my grandmother about that picture in my head. She was raising all of us on practically no income, and she always told me to never, but never, let the picture become blurred. She told me about the value of that inner picture, and that I always kept it, and believed in it, I would only have that picture to act upon.

As I got older and finished high school, I applied to several schools in premed curricula, and I was rejected over and over again, but I could not shake that picture that my grandmother helped me to have as a ragtag little boy playing with the chickens in our little hut in Jamaica. Finally I was given a conditional opportunity to enroll in a premed program in Europe, and I worked my way there and through school.

Today I am a physician with a thriving practice. Without that vision, without that invisible picture in mind, I could never have escaped the life of poverty that continues today for most of my brothers and sisters and all of my friends there. They live in poverty and believe that life dealt them a stacked deck, and that I was lucky. But I know better. I am living the life I pictured for myself.

And Dr. Dyer, don’t you ever let anyone dissuade you from telling the truths that you know, because you are doing much more to help those in horrible circumstances than those who buy the big lie that their lives are beyond their own control.

Dr. Dyer asks his readers to suspend any erroneous beliefs that these truths apply exclusively to him, the doctor in Washington, D.C. and to a chosen few, but has nothing to do with any of us. In actuality, it has everything to do with all of us.

He argues that these truths transcend individual lives because it involves universal laws and principles that were here long before we all showed up in our physical form. He’s simply reporting on what he knows to be true for his own self and many others. That if you want to experience prosperity in a miraculous level, he suggests that you must leave behind your old ways of thinking and develop a new way of imagining what is possible for you to experience in your life.

The old tried and true adage supports Dr. Wayne Dyer's principle: Thoughts manifest themselves.

Ask and you shall receive, applies as well.
